Disturbed by persistent wanton killings and destruction of properties by alleged blood thirsty marauders, herdsmen and insurgents in the South-East, particularly Ebonyi State, a social crusading group, Greater Ebonyi House, has expressed worries over the ugly incidents
While calling for immediate stoppage, the group lamented that even security agents, community leaders and youths have become targets of the criminals and appeals for drastic actions from the various tiers of Government.
It’s pertinent to recall that Greater Ebonyi House’s statement is coming on the heels of the recent reported incessant killings in several communities in the state, sometimes in the most barbaric and heinous ways.
According to the statement endorsed by the coordinator of the group, Prince Poly Nwankwo “In this age, the sanctity of life means nothing to the blood thirsty criminals on the prowl in Ebonyi and other parts of South-East.
“Communities are being attacked at random: people are being slaughtered like animals even as houses and other valuable properties are looted or destroyed even in broad daylight. In fact, it could be said that life has become brutish and short in the state because often times gunmen take over the highway, shooting at anything in sight.
Kidnappers are also on the highway, making life unbearable for the common people” he decried.
The statement further alleged that “It appears that some of the gunmen are sponsored by politicians to hit their opponents and family members.
For instance, Mr Chinedu Halifax, popularly known as Okenwa, who is a brother-in-law to Governor Dave Umahi, missed being assassinated by the whiskers last February. .
The group also expressed disappointment on the incessant violence against women and children despite ongoing efforts to stem the crime by the government.
According to the group, it is absolutely wrong to punish children of women who indulge in lesbianism or same sex acts if their mother does not surrender herself for punishment and cleansing.
The group posited that: “It is wrong to punish children for the sins of their parents. It is equally a condemnable practice and unfortunately, it is also rampant in other states like Cross River, Abia, Delta, Rivers and Imo. The practice is not only barbaric, inhuman but also an infringement on the rights of women and children.”
The group further cited the police confirmed recent case of one Chinasa Ogbaga who killed two of his children and left one fatally injured in Okpuitumo community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State because he had a problem with their mother.
The group, therefore, urges government to protect the citizens from the rampaging herders and obnoxious cultural cum traditional practices in some communities in the state.
