Abia State Police Command has established the Police Complaints Response Unit CRU, in the State, in
according to the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun. A press release made available to News Echo on Wednesday, by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, for Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, said the specialized unit within the Nigerian Police Force would be dedicated to addressing complaints and reports of police misconduct, thereby ensuring accountability and transparency in the actions of police officers and fostering a positive relationship between the police and the public in the State.

She said that in the the event of encountering brutality or any form of misconduct from police officers, residents of Abia State should follow some essential steps which include
“remaining calm and composed during any encounter with the Police and avoiding aggressive reactions, as this can escalate the situation.

The release advised residents to ” document the incident If possible, record the incident discreetly using the person’s smartphone or other recording devices to capture both the audio and video evidence which would help the person to support his or her complaint.

The press release encouraged Abia residents to note down the name and any other identifying information of the involved Police officers, explaining that this information is vital for filing a complaint.

It said that If there are witnesses presen during any altercation, the victims should collect their contact information as according to the Police Command, witnesses can provide valuable testimony in support of such complaints.
