A chieftain of the Labour Party, Chief Iheanyi Frank Chinasa, has tasked the newly-inaugurated members of the National Assembly from the Southeast on the need to make laws that would benefit all sections of the geopolitical zone. He reminded the federal legislators that elections are over, saying that it’s now time to work for development of the Southeast across party lines. Chinasa spoke during a meeting with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and the member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Benjamin Kalu, in Abuja.

This was disclosed in a statement forwarded to newsmen on Tuesday. Chinasa called for the establishment of the Southeast development commission. He explained that the commission, when realized, would be instrumental in addressing the challenges impeding the socio-economic and infrastructural growth of the Southeast region.

He said, “The Commission would be instrumental in addressing the lingering effects of the civil war, particularly in areas severely impacted by bombs and erosion, aiming to alleviate the challenges faced by these communities. “It would have the capacity to boost the economy of the region.

It would also ensure the construction of a free trade centre for the five Southeast states, along with the development of internal railways; and as well, address the repair of most inter-state roads like Aba-Port-Harcourt and Ikot-Ekpene-ikwuano-Umuahia. “The Commission has high chances of being realized quicker if all the Southeast legislators sponsored a joint bill for its establishment.”
