A retired Major General from Nigerian Army, Ijioma N. Ijioma has awarded a 2.5km road construction contract in his Umuhu-Ezechi community in Bende LGA of Abia State, worth over N300 million naira.

The road project, which was awarded to NOPZE construction company LTD, has been flagged off by the retired General and would cover 1.5 kilometer Amazu-Umuokwe, 500 meter Achi-Amaugwu and another 500 meter Amazu-Amaeke roads, totalling 2.5 km.

When completed, the roads are expected to lift the rural dwellers and intending traders and visitors from the urban areas of Abia, the smooth access to Umuhu Ezechi and transform the community in development.

Gutters are also to be installed on the roads to aid smooth movement of water as well as contribute to durability of the roads.

The road reconstruction contracts were awarded by Ijioma New Deal Foundation.

Interacting with News Echo, Engr. Mike Essien, one of the staff of NOPZE construction company, assured that his company would do a quality job on the roads as covered in the contract agreement and promised to deliver the job on time.

Speaking with journalists, the retired Major General Ijioma N. Ijioma said the age-long plight of his people made him to bring out his life savings to do the road contracts.

According to him, ” That road has been a major challenge to my community from my childhood which made it difficult for us to transport items and even human movements.”

He continued , “That is why I have taken the bull by the horns to do this and you know it is not the responsibility of an individual to do roads but when government fails, individual with a kind heart like me must be able to take up the responsibility.”

The retired general said it was his means of giving back to his people and promised to do more for Abians, through his New Deal Foundation.
