The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged residents and people of Anambra to take the opportunity of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to mobilise themselves and to come out to participate in the exercise ahead of the August 2027 general elections.
It also cautioned against indulgence in double registration as such would be an exercise in futility hence the commission will reject the act thereby denying the registration the right to vote in future elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Anambra State, Dr Queen Elizabeth Agwu stated this on Wednesday during a press conference held at the commission’s headquarters in Awka the state capital.
Dr Agwu disclosed that a total of 4, 423 voters had so far been recorded in Anambra by the commission within three weeks of the CVR exercise commencing across the country.
She said the commission has embarked on statewide sensitisation and mobilisation of prospective voters including those who are 18 years and above to participate in the CVR so that they can vote during the 2027 elections.
The REC explained that the CVR is taking place across the 326 wards and 21 local government areas of Anambra.
She pointed out that the CVR started on January 5th and is expected to close on April 17th 2026.
According to her, “Ndi Anambra should use this opportunity to go to the wards and LGAs which are the registration centres for the CVR, to participate in the exercise.”
Recall that the last continuous voter registration (CVR) done by the commission in July 2025 was for the governorship election held in Anambra on November 8, 2025, and that process led to the population that were expected cast their votes in that election to 2.8 million.
Dr Agwu noted that “One important value of the current continuous voters registration (CVR) is that apart from the elections it may be useful for other purposes in future. I want us to take it seriously.”
“We have placed messages on radios and televisions as well as others telling us about one thing; about our civic responsibility. Once you have your Permanent Voters Card (PVC) it covers every other thing.”
“We started on the 5th of January and we are going to end on the 17th of April 2026. But I will want to beg the people of Anambra as usual, let us not wait till the end when we will begin to do last-minute rush.”
“We may not extend this; this is the second phase of the CVR. Please encourage your people, those around you to go and register. The first week which is from the 5th of January to the 12th of January, has zero registration. The second week of the exercise we had 936 persons that registered. In the third week of the exercise we have 1, 832 persons.”
“The fourth week of the exercise which we had just concluded we have 1, 425; bringing it together to 4,423 persons that have registered in the entire Anambra,” Agwu said.
“I will at this point beg people of Anambra, let us not do double registration. Remember I told you last time that double registration is a waste of time, it’s effort in futility. Eventually, they were ejected and the system rejected them when we were cleaning up the activity.”
“And we are rotating the process from one ward to another and the local government areas. If you fail to go and register we are undoing ourselves as Ndigbo. You don’t know what the outcome will be used for in future and if you don’t register our number will be the least or lowest. If 20 million is the number and your own is 4 million it’s not enough and if you have 3,999 with that your own will be 4 million, ” the REC added.
