Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, has intensified efforts to tackle child mortality and other challenges being faced by pregnant and nursing mothers in the State.
This is even as the Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (APHCDA) reiterated its readiness to maintain the partnership with the Governor’s wife towards providing Abia children and mothers with sound and disease-free health.
Mrs. Ikpeazu who spoke at Apumiri, the headquarters of Umuahia South LGA of the State during the launching of 2021 maternal, child and newborn week assured that Abia would remain the leader in provision of quality healthcare for mother, newborn and the pregnant.
She added that the state government was in partnership with relevant government agencies and communities in providing basic rights to life for mothers and the newborn, noting that family planning, preventive treatment of malaria as well as prevention of mother-to -child HIV/AIDS infection.
Her words, “We are pursuing efforts to reduce high rate of preventable deaths by scaling up some basic steps such as family planning preventive treatment of malaria in pregnant women and prevention of mother to child HIV/AIDS transmission”
Executive secretary of APHCDA Dr Chinagozi Adindu, lamented the high rate of maternal and under five deaths in the world, pointing out that mothers were in the category of the vulnerable group in the society that access affordable and quality healthcare services.
Adindu also explained Abia State was among the States that had implemented Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, with successful implementation of more than 17 Goals of the United Nations.
The executive secretary commended the efforts of both Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and his wife, Nkechi, in putting the health of Abia kids as first priority.
Maternal, Child and newborn week is a week-long program that features anti-tetanus drugs admissions, de-worming, provision of treated nets, family planning, immunization among others .
