Candidates for executive offices in the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State council have flagged off their campaigns around various chapels in the council, flaunting in the air, their manifestoes.
The election, which holds Thursday, April 8 will be held at the NUJ press centre, Aba road Umuahia after the election screening committee, chaired by former Chairman of the Abia NUJ, Comrade Ogbonnaya Iheaka concluded the screening exercises it commenced more than a month ago.
Two candidates, Ezeogo Boniface Okoro of Correspondent Chapel and Comrade Victor Ndukwe of Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA) chapel were cleared for the chairmanship contest while Comrade Uche Nwosu, also of correspondent chapel was disqualified from vying for the chairmanship seat for not meeting the attendance requirements.
Comrade Chidi Asonye, the only aspirant to the office of Vice chairman was also disqualified by the screening council for some issues, though the screening committee made it clear that the national secretariat of the NUJ still had the final says on some jobs done by the screening committee members. But other executive positions, like vice chairman, secretary, financial secretary, treasure, auditor have only one candidates, meaning that they are running unopposed.
Speaking when he visited the unity federated and federal information chapels of NUJ, Ezeogo Boniface Okoro from correspondent chapel, promised to use his wealth of experience for the transformation of the welfare of the council members.
