A pro-democracy , Peoples Knowledge and Equity (PKE) has described the attacks on Kuje correctional facility in Abuja and the attack on the advance convoy of President Mohamadu Buhari, as the most shameful events in the history of Nigeria.
The group also noted that the two twin attacks highlighted that the war against banditry in the country is not producing the desired results.
PKE therefore, told all security chiefs, the minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to immediately resign from their jobs and tender unreserved apology to Nigerians.
The group which spoke in Umuahia through Chief Andy Okpegbue, (Secretary) in reaction to the attacks, wondered why the highest prison in the country where hardened criminals, especially Boko haram leaders were kept, would be invaded by terrorists who reportedly carried out the destructions of the Kuje prison, operating for more than two hours.
The group expressed fear that the peace of the federal capital territory, Abuja and other cities in Nigeria may be threatened thereafter, as according to him, “some of the most dreaded criminals who were kept inside Kuje prison have been released and many of them would likely add to the insecurity headache we currently have.”
“The terrorists who came to release them may provide them more arms and direct them to go after the Nigerians and you can imagine the consequences such could bring upon innocent Nigerians”
” It is the biggest shame in the history of Nigeria that the place where hardened criminals are kept was invaded and the criminals there ,were released and this happened with little or no resistance by security agencies.
” Several men of Nigerian Army were busy in Imo State doing Army day celebration and Rauf Aregbesola was believably much interested in Osun State governorship election than the functions of his office.”
“All service chiefs, Aregbesola, Malami and the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Correctional Centre should resign now and tender unreserved apology to Nigerians”, Okpegbue fumed.
On the attack on President Buhari’s convoy to Katsina, Buhari’s, pointed out that it showed that the Nigerians are in trouble, unless a new approach to the anti-terror war is adopted.
“Advance convoy of President Mohamadu Buhari was also attacked and you can see the height the criminals are taking their games to. If the convoy of a President of a nation could be attacked, then who is safe now”, said Chief Okpegbue.
He demanded that all criminals, especially high profile suspects who escaped from Kuje should be re-arrested without delay for the country to enjoy peace.
“Publishing the faces of Boko Haram suspects who escaped from Kuje Prison should not be the end of the story. Federal government should show seriousness by re-arresting them without delay. We need peace and development in this country Nigeria”, said the pro-democracy group.
