A Professor of Microbiology Professor Hope Chukwuemeka Okereke has stressed the need for people to eat local Nigerian and African fermented foods because of their level of nutrition. Professor Okereke who disclosed this while delivering the 69th inaugural lecture of Abia State University Uturu on the topic “Edible Microbes:
The Mainstay of Life and Health”, held at the University Auditorium, described micro organisms as both human friends and enemies. He called for the continued promotion of African foods and products to discourage people from too much consumption of foreign products which are dangerous to health and to encourage local manufacturers.
The Professor of Microbiology traced the high rate of illnesses and occurrence of other new diseases to the uncontrolled and unregulated consumption of foreign foods which do more bad than good to the African consumer. Declaring the 69th Inaugural lecture open, the Chairman on the Occasion and Vice Chancellor ABSU Professor Onyemachi Ogbulu commended Professor Okereke for coming to demystify the importance and health benefits of edible microbes to mankind and welcomed him into the college of Distinguished Professors.
