Foundation stone of Institute of Digital Economy has been laid at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, aimed at making the school a leader in digital economy revolution in Nigeria and beyond.
About 187 graduands have been admitted into the graduate school of the university. The exercises were performed on Saturday during the 6th Convocation ceremony of the university, held at the school’s auditorium.
During the convocation, Chukwukere Chinedu Michael of Electrical Electronic Engineering department, emerged the best graduating student with 4.75 CGPA while Senator Chris Ekpeyong and some other Nigerians were honoured with honorary doctoral degrees by the university.
Delivering his address, the Chancellor of Gregory University, Prof Gregory Ibe said the school has become a forward-thinking ivory tower which has inaugurated the United Nations Education Transmission Centre and West African Green Energy Development Institute, adding that the school has been supporting the host State of Abia, through donation of medical equipment, firefighting vehicle among others.
He further announced that the best graduating student, Chukwukere Chinedu Michael would be sponsored by the school up to doctoral level while other first class graduates would be given automatic employment, in accordance with the university’s policy.
The Acting Vice Chancellor Gregory University, Professor Augustine Uwakwe said modern teaching equipment and sound teaching staff were deployed in preparing the graduands, pointing out that the graduands were also , “trained to acquire additional skills coupled with the matching spirit of enterprise that will subsequently empower them to become job creators and innovators.”
He explained that the National Universities Commission (NUC ) had in 2018–2019 approved 16 additional academic programs like Pharmacy, Nursing, Optometry, Public health, medical laboratory, Radiography and Architecture.
All programs in the College of Education of the university, according to the V -C, also received approval from the NUC even as he assured that the teaching hospital of the school at Ezinnachi is nearing completion. The Vice Chancellor charged the graduands to remain shining ambassadors of the school.
The best graduating student, Chukwukere Chinedu Michael who spoke on behalf of other first class graduates, expressed appreciation to his school, especially the lecturers for modeling them into greatness and promised to remain a good ambassador of his school.
