Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has said that Nigeria cannot survive on oil alone but on quality education which is the roadmap to development of any nation.
Jonathan made these points at Uturu, Abia State during convocation ceremony of Gregory University, held at the school’s auditorium. He also cautioned that Nigerian must stop depending on oil revenue for the sustenance of her economy.
The former President who was honored with an honorary PhD in public administration by the institution noted that his love for education made him to establish twelve conventional universities and other schools of study across the country.
Jonathan expressed his appreciation to the founder of Gregory University, Prof. Gregory Ibe for the honour while pointing out that the vision of the GUU founder was aimed at providing education and jobs for Nigeria’s teeming youths. Without these private universities, most of our students here would not have gained admission.” “As a man who believes that education is the bedrock of development, I am very passionate about education”
He continued, “Some people may have gotten certificates but I don’t think they are educated and this underscores the place of quality education in our country”
The former President, who had earlier laid the foundation stone for Gregory University’s 1000-bed international school of medicine at Ezinnachi, Okigwe Imo State, explained that the hospital on completion would treat patients from across Africa while world-class facilities would be installed in the hospital.
In his remarks, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, represented by his Deputy, Sir. Ude Oko Chukwu, promised to maintain a solid partnership with Gregory University in areas of education, skill acquisition, adding that the school has changed the narrative in admission especially by providing admissions for young students.
Speaking earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chancellor of Gregory University, Uturu, Prof. Gregory Ibe reiterated the desire of his school to provide a unique system of education for students, which he said has made every product of the school a job creator and nation builder.
