The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad, in collaboration with the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue (AIRS), has intensified its enforcement operations against illegal levy collection and related criminal activities, leading to the arrest of three suspected revenue collectors.
In a series of well-coordinated raids on identified black spots, operatives during the weekend apprehended individuals involved in illegal revenue collection.
Our Correspondent gathered that one of the suspects who was simply identified as Abuchi Okechukwu, was arrested at Unizik Junction for unlawfully extorting motorists, contravening established state revenue laws. Another, Monday Nwaoka, a native of Izzi in Ebonyi State, was apprehended at Regina Junction, where he was reportedly collecting levies from tricycle operators under false pretenses.
In a related incident, Chukwubike Ezenwudo, from Amaesi in Ekwulobia Local Government Area, was caught in possession of Indian hemp, highlighting the ongoing issue of drug abuse and trafficking in the region.
The arrested suspects were transferred to the Anambra Internal Revenue for further investigation and subsequently arraigned in court. They were convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for their offenses.
The swift and strategic actions by the agency have drawn commendation from residents and business owners in affected areas, who expressed relief at the removal of notorious elements that have long disrupted peace and hindered lawful activities.
In his speach, Anambra state Executive Director, -AIRS, Dr Greg Ezeilo noted that the arrests was to express Anambra State Government’s efforts and unwavering commitment to law enforcement and the elimination of touting, drug-related offenses, and unauthorized revenue collection. He also urged the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
“These operations send a strong message that illegal practices will no longer be tolerated in Anambra State,” said a spokesperson for the Internal Revenue Service. “We call on citizens to support these efforts by being vigilant and cooperating with law enforcement agencies.”
The agency affirmed that more raids are planned in the coming weeks, as part of the administration’s broader objective to sanitize the revenue system and restore public trust in government processes.
