Residents of Port Harcourt road, Ubani Street, Umuoji road in Aba have appealed for help from individuals and organizations following a flood disaster on Saturday.
The flooding which they said, was caused by 3-hour concentrated rain, destroyed their belongings and rendered them homeless.
The rain which started by noon, according to victims, pounded the commercial city for three hours, leaving homes and shops flooded while some cars were trapped in the flood as their owners abandoned them in the water and fled.
One of the victims and a resident of Port Harcourt road, Elder Ogba Ndukwe named the buildings mostly affected to include 142 Port Harcourt road, 144 road by Ubani Street, George’s street among other houses in the Enyimba city.
Elder Ndukwe who said his family lost everything it has to the rampaging flood, blamed Abia State government for not constructing the road after allegedly receiving about 27.4 billion naira from the World Bank for road construction and erosion control in Aba.
“My family is stranded. We don’t even have a place to sleep and what to eat. The rain came when every member of our family had left for business. We only came back this evening to behold our property swept away or floating on the water”, said Elder Ndukwe.
Shop owners along Port Harcourt road and adjoining streets were also affected by the afternoon rain as their goods were destroyed.
Efforts to hear from Abia State Erosion and Watershed Management Project and Abia State Emergency Management Agency( SEMA), were not successful as their offices were not open on Saturday.
