The People Democratic Party, PDP, has described as unfortunate the inability of Governor Hope Uzodinma to stem the rising insecurity in the state. The spokesman for the Imo PDP 2023 gubernatorial campaign, Barr. Gozie Nwachukwu, made the claim at a press conference held in Owerri on Tuesday.

The PDP said Uzodinma relocated to Abuja since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration and abdicated his constitutional responsibility of ensuring that the lives and property of the people are secured.

Nwachukwu, flanked by the Campaign Director of New Media, Dumebi Ifeanyichukwu, stated that the Governor’s absence from remains a concern and should be condemned by all. The opposition further alleged that non-state actors recruited by the state government have taken over the roles of the security agencies in Imo. Nwachukwu urged the President Tinubu to immediately set up an independent investigation panel to look into the wanton killings in the state.

“Bullets rained in Imo in the last seven days. We are seriously worried. We are calling on the President and the Commander-in-Chief to please urgently set up an independent fact-finding team”, he said. The spokesperson extended the condolence of the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to those that have suffered irreparable losses as a result of insecurity. In the last one week, suspected armed men burnt part of the popular Amaraku Market in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state.

The hoodlums also razed vehicles and goods belonging to traders, mostly women, and fled to another community, Obolo, also in the LGA, where they burnt commercial vehicles. The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) recently cried out over the killing of hundreds of citizens in Imo, adding that 300 others disappeared without trace between January 2021 and May 2023.
