Umuahia North local government headquarters, the Abia State capital have been overgrown by grasses. This observation was made on Saturday during the monthly clean up exercise of the State. A visit around the local government secretariat showed that most parts of the facility were overgrown by weeds.

It was also observed that a heap of refuse was left unevaluated inside the LGA headquarters. Out of the 15 block of buildings in secretariat, 12 of them were overgrown by grasses even on the first environmental cleanup day organized by Governor Alex Otti.

The local government staff who were supposed to participate in the first clean up of clean up were nowhere to be seen as they shunned the exercise. Only the front area of the LGA was kept neat as observed by the reporter.

Meanwhile, the first clean up exercise in the State recorded some level of compliance in some parts of Umuahia but failed in some other areas. For instance, restrictions on movement vehicular and humans were not much enforced as some people were seen going about their businesses.

But at some motor parks like Ochendo HiAce Park, Aba Park and Okigwe Park, drivers and traders were seen cleaning their environment. When contacted, officials of Abia State ministry of environment who pleaded anonymity said the job of supervising the clean up was being handled by Abia State government’s special task force on environment.

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Otti, Mr Kazie Uko said the exercise will pick up by next month’s exercise, adding that the radio announcement about this month’s clean up came a bit late which according to him, may have played a role in low turn up of participants.
