The Imo State Government says it will soon complete a Standard Abattoir for butchers and meat sellers in the state. Speaking during a general meeting for meat sellers and butchers held recently in Owerri, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Abbatoir, Hon. Hassan Nwaowa, while addressing the butchers said the Governor is passionate about the operations of butchers and meat sellers in the state but displeased about the dirty and unhealthy environment where they do their business.
He stated that the manner how the butchers handle the consumable and has decided that all stakeholders be invited to reach understanding on how best to handle the meat as it can affect the health of consumers. He urged the butchers to join forces with the state government to improve their activities and employ the services of vetenary doctors for an inspection and the purpose of operating in a clean environment. He maintained that the state government will no longer console dirty environment of Abbatoir in the state capital and other areas.
The special adviser said that 27 coordinators of the various Abattoir units across the state should galvanize efforts in ensuring a smooth running of the Abattoirs and urged butchers to register with the state Abattoir office with a stipulated fee which will be paid into the state treasury. He further assured the butchers of the government’s protection from illegal revenue collectors and touts.
The secretary of the one of the Units in the state, Mr Jamie Ebujor said , the decision of the state government is apt and calls for other unit coordinators to unite and follow the governor’s directives to ensure proper management of the Abattoirs.
