Former Special Adviser on Political affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak was in the early hours of Sunday assassinated by gunmen along Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, near Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri, Imo State.

Gulak who was said to be headed for the Imo airport to catch a flight, was said to be travelling in a Toyota Camry cab, with other two occupants when the gunmen intercepted their cab, identified him and shot him dead.

A Press release by the spokesman of Imo State Police command, SP Bala Elkana disclosed that Gulak left his hotel room at Protea Hotel, New Owerri without informing the Police nor the sister security agencies, considering the fragile security situation in the South East and Imo in particular.

“He left without any security escorts and while the cab driver took irregular route to the airport, six armed bandits who rode in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified and shot at Ahmed Gulak at around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, close to the Airport”.

According to the press release, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, (CP) Abutu Yaro, has ordered a discreet investigation into the matter as Tactical and Special forces have been deployed to cordon off the area and arrest the perpetrators.

Recall that Gulak was the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election committee which conducted the controversial primary election that produced current Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma as the party’s flag bearer.

His death has been generating a lot of reaction, chiefly among which is the ultimatum given to Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma by a coalition of Northern youths to produce his killers within two weeks or risk being declared a persona non grata in all parts of Northern Nigeria.
